Victor Teslaru defines his painting as a process of visual thought. Trained in the academic tradition and shaped by a decisive period of abstraction, he works slowly and methodically, which gives his practice both density and rarity.
His current stage is marked by a renewed humanism, in which the European portrait serves as a tool of contemporary analysis. The faces he constructs do not aim at likeness but at the way tension and emotional fragility are inscribed on the painted surface. The guiding question in this body of work is direct: if tension and pain were to wear a mask, what would it look like? The paintings suggest an answer through an aesthetic in which beauty functions as the form of resolution.
The method is cyclical: each work passes through successive layers of construction and erasure until it reaches a convincing balance. Surfaces are carefully articulated—areas executed with academic rigor intersect with visible, restless chromatic gestures. This formal tension generates a recognizable language in which discipline and risk coexist.
Teslaru develops a practice that stands within the continuity of the European portrait while also reorienting it. If the great masters of the tradition—from Antonello da Messina to Bacon—used the face to convey social presence or psychological intensity, Teslaru treats it as a critical site of the present, where subtle emotional registers and the pressures of contemporary context become legible. His works do not deliver a fixed image but reveal the living process of visual thought.
